About the CIS RAT
Section titled “About the CIS RAT”The CIS RAT (Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences - Resource Administration Team) is a team of dedicated students who manage the computer resources of the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences and the Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences at Hosei University.
History
Section titled “History”The RAT was established in April 2001 by a group of first-year students aiming to enhance the convenience and security of the information lab. We are grateful for the understanding and support of the faculty and staff over the years, and remain committed to ongoing improvement.
Activities
Section titled “Activities”At the heart of our activities lies the provision of computer system environments for education and research. This involves defining, building, operating and maintaining servers, client PCs and networks. Each year, we actively recruit new members with the aim of making the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences even more attractive by promoting the transfer of knowledge and the development of new services.
The RAT serves the following systems and activities:
- Various servers:
- Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences account directory server (integrated authentication)
- DNS server
- DHCP server
- Official website server
- Mail server (mailing lists, lifelong email addresses)
- Storage server
- License server
- GitLab server
- Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences and Graduate School GPU Cluster
- RAT Portal Site
- Support for downloading Microsoft products (Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching)
- Remote shell and file access (SSH/SCP)
- Web hosting and simple mailing lists for research labs (subdomains)
- Loaned laptops:
- Creating master images for shipment (for laptops loaned out in the 2022 academic year)
- Troubleshooting
- Windows PCs:
- Building and providing self-recovery machines
- Creating recovery images
- Supporting open-source community activities (hardware, software, and networking)
The backend of these systems and services is largely composed of open-source software such as Linux (AlmaLinux), KVM, Ganeti, Apache, nginx, OpenLDAP, BIND, DHCPd, Postfix, Nagios, and rsyslog.
In addition to these activities, we provide technical support to students and faculty, conduct online tests, and offer guidance for new students. We also hold regular meetings once a week and study sessions approximately twice a year to share knowledge and improve technical skills among members.
The following items are not managed by the RAT:
- Information outlets installed in classroom desks (at the Koganei Information Center)
- Network for research laboratories
- Content of the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences and Graduate School Official Website
- CIS Moodle server

For those interested in joining the RAT
Section titled “For those interested in joining the RAT”- The RAT operates in Research Laboratory M-1 (W4007) on the 4th floor of the West Building.
- We are looking for members who want to work with us to improve the environment at the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences.
- You don’t need technical knowledge to get started – enthusiasm and a willingness to take action will lead you to knowledge.
- We may invite you to join the RAT if you are recommended by your instructor for programming or projects.
Process for joining the RAT
Section titled “Process for joining the RAT”We typically recruit members in the following process:
- Late April: RAT information session
- May - June: RAT Linux introductory study session
- Summer vacation: RAT trial period
Participation in the RAT information session and the RAT Linux introductory study session is not mandatory, and you officially join after participating in the RAT trial period.
After joining the RAT
Section titled “After joining the RAT”- You will set up a practice environment and learn the basic procedures for server setup. Then, you will work on building actual production environments.
- The RAT has fixed activity days, and participation during those times is generally required. However, you may also be asked to work individually outside of those fixed days as needed.
- Twice a year, we hold RAT study sessions where members share their skills and knowledge.
